The Pirru Thangkuray Program connects participants with culture to develop a greater sense of identity and belonging, and supports them to set and achieve goals that build self-efficacy, self-determination and self-regulation.
Mentors facilitate this process through cultural activities and coaching conversations that challenge and support participants to think big and start small in pursuing their aspirations and goals.
The program is designed to be delivered flexibly to best meet participant needs and contextual demands.
This resource provides mentors with a suggested mentor session structure to deliver locally informed cultural sessions with participants. Goal setting and coaching session materials and resources are also provided to support mentors in delivering these aspects of the program.
The materials provided in these support pages are designed to complement the Pirru Thangkuray Participant Workbook. The Workbook is designed to support participant learning, growth and development, and can be complemented by a range of mentor led activities.
Each Pirru Thangkuray mentoring session should begin with a welcome and roll call of participants.
This should be followed by an opportunity for participants to set a goal and/or review current goals and progress towards their achievement. It may also be an opportunity for mentors to identify individual participants who require additional support.
Where a session includes a cultural experience, it should identify;
- a clear purpose – the why?
- strategic processes to achieve the purpose– the how?
- practices that demonstrate the process and achieve the session’s purpose – the what?
Subsequently, each mentoring session should be evaluated to inform the delivery of future sessions.
The template that follows may provide guidance around the delivery of mentor led sessions.
Where mentoring sessions with participants are based on the Pirru Thangkuray Participant Workbook, the mentor can refer to the annotated versions found in these resource pages to guide and facilitate group and individual activities.
Once again, these sessions should begin with a welcome and roll call of participants, which is followed by an opportunity for participants to set a goal and/or review current goals and progress towards their achievement.
When using the Workbook, mentors can use the resource to promote discussion and sharing of experiences and ideas with and across participants in group settings.
The concepts covered in the Workbook can also be applied to mentor led sessions to reinforce them with participants and to consolidate their understanding.
